Safe-Reward-Qwen3-1.7B

This model is a Reward Model (RM) for evaluating safety quality in English, Chinese, and Japanese, created by fine-tuning Qwen/Qwen3-1.7B.

It is primarily intended for applications such as reinforcement learning to enhance model safety.

It is designed to indirectly evaluate the quality of text by predicting a score for (prompt, response) pairs, particularly in the context of harmful content. Also, safe answers will receive a higher score and risky answers will receive a lower score.

Training Methodology

The model was trained using the trl library's Reward Modeling functionality.

Loss Calculation

Let $x$ be the input sequence (prompt), and let $y^+$ and $y^-$ be the chosen (preferred) and rejected (undesired) sequences, respectively. Based on the Bradley-Terry model (Bradley & Terry, 1952), the probability that $y^+$ is preferred over $y^-$ given a reward function $r$ is:

$$p(y^+ \succ y^- \mid x) = \sigma(r(x, y^+) - r(x, y^-))$$

Here, $\sigma$ is the sigmoid function.

The reward model $r_\theta(x, y)$ is trained to assign a higher score to the preferred response $y^+$ than to the undesired response $y^-$. The loss is defined as the negative log-likelihood (NLL) over the observed preference dataset $D$:
