Overview

This model is a Time-Series Transformer designed to predict residential and industrial energy consumption patterns. By analyzing historical hourly load data, it provides probabilistic forecasts for the next 24-hour cycle, enabling utility providers to optimize grid distribution and renewable energy integration.

Model Architecture

The model implements an Encoder-Decoder Time Series Transformer:

• Temporal Embedding: Captures seasonal patterns (daily and weekly) using a multi-lag sequence (1h, 24h, 168h).
• Probabilistic Head: Instead of point estimates, it outputs a Student's T-Distribution, allowing for uncertainty quantification.
• Self-Attention: Multi-head attention layers identify long-range dependencies between past weather events and current energy spikes.

Intended Use

• Smart Grid Management: Load balancing and peak-demand reduction strategies.
• Renewable Optimization: Coordinating energy storage discharge based on predicted usage gaps.
• Billing Projections: Providing consumers with estimated future usage based on historical habits.

Limitations

• Unexpected Events: Cannot predict consumption changes caused by sudden infrastructure failure or extreme unpredicted weather anomalies.
• Granularity: Optimized for hourly data; may lose precision if used for sub-minute frequency analysis.
• Context Window: Requires at least 168 hours (one week) of continuous historical data for optimal accuracy.
