Model Card: Financial Summarization (Pegasus-Based)

Overview

This repository explores financial text summarization using the existing human-centered-summarization/financial-summarization-pegasus model.

The project demonstrates the use of transformer-based NLP for condensing financial text and examining how automated summarization can support analysis of information-dense documents.

Intended Use

With appropriate evaluation and human review, financial summarization may be useful for tasks such as:

Condensing financial news and reports

Identifying key points in longer financial texts

Supporting exploratory analysis of financial information

Producing preliminary summaries for research workflows

Comparing information across collections of financial documents

Generated summaries should be treated as analytical aids rather than authoritative representations of source material.

Example Use Case

Input:
“Alphabet reported a 12% rise in revenue driven by cloud growth. Advertising segments remained stable despite macroeconomic pressures. CFO noted increased investment in AI R&D…”

Example summary:
- Alphabet revenue up 12%, driven by cloud
- Advertising remains stable amid economic pressures
- Increased AI investment noted by CFO
---

## Strengths

- Fine-tuned specifically for **financial language and structure**
- Supports both extractive and abstractive summarization
- Useful for automating investor briefings and compliance review support

---

## Limitations

Automated financial summarization can introduce several forms of error:

Important details or qualifications may be omitted

Numerical or contextual information may be misrepresented

Tone and uncertainty may be flattened or lost

Generated text may contain unsupported information

Performance may vary across document types and financial domains

Outputs should therefore be compared with the original source when accuracy matters. This model should not be relied upon independently for investment, legal, regulatory, or other high-stakes decisions.

## Model Architecture

- Base: `google/pegasus-cnn_dailymail`
- Fine-tuned dataset: Financial documents and market reports
- Max input length: 512 tokens
- Output style: Bullet point or short paragraph summaries

Architecture family: Pegasus

Model used: human-centered-summarization/financial-summarization-pegasus

Task: Text summarization

Domain: Financial text
---

## Scope

This project uses an existing financial summarization model rather than training or fine-tuning Pegasus from scratch.

The purpose is to demonstrate hands-on use of transformer-based NLP for financial text analysis and explore the capabilities and limitations of automated summarization.
