Unlike DPO, which derives updates explicitly and eliminates the need for a reward function, PPO requires explicit rewards that must be provided by some source. In general, this could be a simple function, such as checking equality with a correct answer. Currently, TRL only supports rewards from other models for PPO (though this will be addressed in future updates).
I've fine-tuned the AutoModelForCausalLM("HuggingFaceTB/SmolLM-135M-Instruct") with PPOConfig and PPOTrainer using my fine-tuned reward model from NickVolya/llm-course-hw2-reward-model repository
