Infrared photography involves capturing images using a portion of the light spectrum that is beyond what the human eye can perceive. Infrared light lies outside the range of visible light, with longer wavelengths.

In infrared photography, special camera equipment or filters are used to block out visible light while allowing infrared light to pass through. This results in a unique and distinct visual representation of the scene, with some colors appearing differently than they would in normal visible light photography.

The characteristics of infrared photography can vary depending on the specific technique or equipment used. In general, infrared photographs often exhibit certain key features:

1. Increased Contrast: Infrared photography tends to produce images with heightened contrast, as infrared light interacts differently with various surfaces, resulting in distinct tonal variations.

2. Ethereal and Dreamlike Atmosphere: Infrared images often have a surreal and ethereal quality, with foliage appearing white or light-colored, creating a ghostly effect. Skies can appear darker, and clouds may have a dramatic contrast against the background.

3. Invisible Infrared Light Sources: Infrared photography can reveal light sources that are typically invisible to the human eye, such as heat radiation or infrared reflections.

4. Creative Effects: Infrared photography opens up possibilities for creative experimentation, as it can transform ordinary scenes into otherworldly landscapes or add a unique twist to portraiture.

Infrared photography finds various applications, including landscape photography, architectural photography, and even scientific and forensic investigations.

It's important to note that capturing infrared photographs requires specialized equipment or modifications to conventional cameras. Additionally, post-processing techniques may be employed to enhance or fine-tune the final images.

Infrared photography offers a fascinating and captivating way to explore and interpret the world around us, revealing unseen aspects and presenting scenes in a fresh and intriguing light.
